During the weeks before the election of 2004, in four of my high school literature classes, I did a unit on politics and the necessity of being involved in the political and civic processes of our country. Most of my students believed that they lacked the power to influence or to make the world better. Even though only a few of the students could vote this year, I hoped to show them that they all could still make a difference.
We, therefore, explored various issues and candidates, looked at the use of media, created scripts and story boards for campaign commercials, read newspapers and looked for helpful Internet sites, and wrote letters to the editor of the local newspaper, among other activities. I was pleased that several students became interested (and had fun sharing their own election choices), and almost all those who could vote, did vote (even though not always for my choice...John Kerry). But, they voted and that was what was most important.
Then yesterday I finished reading Joe Trippi'sbook, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. Trippi, who is probably best known as Howard Dean'scampaign manager for the 2004 election, wrote much about the power of blogs to share information and to empower us as individuals. In fact, Trippi also states that the Internet may well be our last real chance at a true democracy.
Finally, today, a neighbor and e-mail buddy, Michael, said he started a blog. So I thought, why not give it a try. See what this technology and "tool of empowerment" is all about. Now I have decided to add a page to this web site for blogs that often dhow the life of gays, lesbians and bisexuals. A word of warning--blogs change often (sometimes daily) and are often more intimate than some other “information sites,” so I especially want to stress that I will not always know what is posted in the blogs listed on this page.
