Pennsylvania 34th Infantry Regiment
(5th Reserves)
(Pictured L-R; Pvt. Jacob Bailey, 1st LT. John T. Baynes, Sgt. William H. Carter, Co. K)

The companies comprising the 34th Regiment were recruited in the counties of Centre, Lancaster, Huntingdon, Lycoming, Northumberland, Clearfield, Union and Bradford. They were ordered to report at Camp Curtin in Harrisburg, where on the 20th of June, 1861 the regiment was organized.
- The PA 34th should not be confused with the PA 34th Emergency Regiment of 1863

Why is the 34th also known as the 5th Reserves?
"Although the Reserves were numbered as "line" regiments, they were better known by their more popular "Reserve" designations. The thirteen infantry regiments, numberd 30th through 42nd, were known as the 1st through the 13th Reserves, and thus each regiment had two numbers. For example, the 32nd Pennsylvania was also known as the 3rd Pennsylvania Reserves. The artillery regiment, numbered 43rd, was better known as the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, and the cavalry regiment, the 44th, as the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry."

After being mustered out of the 34th, many men signed on again to serve
in the PA 191st (2nd veteran reserves) which organized in May, 1864.
